So, here we are again. It’s been a few years. I’ve been babbling on Twitter but I’ve not spewed longform into the ether in a long time. I don’t know that I’ll have much meaningful to say but I’ll give it a shot again.
Let’s start with a State Of The sungo report. Employment wise, I’m working at Time Warner Cable in the Content Operations department. We manage video distribution for our IP video applications as well as the classic RF-based system. I’m a tools developer, building mostly WWW tools using Ruby, Rails and Javascript with MongoDB as the data store. I’m learning a ton because the last time I did serious WWW work was in 2006. I’ve mostly gotten over The Old Guy response of “Back in my day, we didn’t have Bootstrap. We had to build our CSS by hand with punchcards in the dark.”
I’m still helping run irc.perl.org. I’ve not written a serious line of perl in a year and a half, however, and, sadly, I don’t miss it at all. I tried. I tried to go back and write some perl for a personal project. Spending my whole work day writing Ruby code, though, Perl feels really clunky and gross, even with Moose. It does make me sad because most of my career has been perl-centric. But everything has its time. Ruby certainly isn’t perfect but I’m enjoying it. (Javascript is still a shitty shitty language. I don’t know what the NodeJS people are thinking. But that’s a topic for another post.)
Physically, I’m living at the western edge of The Sprawl, in Herndon VA. Suburban hellhole. When folks talk about the horrors of suburban life, they’re talking about Northern Virginia. American Beauty blown up to county size with over a million people crammed into it. But, I have essentially no commute as I live a few miles from the office. I can spend that time overworking instead.
All in all, life’s pretty good these days. Don’t worry, though. I’m still angry, profanity spewing and bald. I’m sure future posts will bear that out.
